Most backyards in Colorado end up in one of two camps - either a thirsty lawn that fights the climate all summer, or a gravel dump that looks lifeless by July. This one landed somewhere much better. We built a yard that actually makes sense for where it lives.

The material selection drove everything here. Mesa cobble and flagstone were the backbone - warm, earthy tones that sit naturally against the surrounding trees and cedar fencing. We layered different stone textures across the yard to give it visual depth without making it feel busy. Warm decomposed granite flows into rounded river cobble, which transitions into the flagstone patio. Each zone has its own feel, but they all read as one cohesive space.

The hot tub pergola area anchors the yard as the main outdoor living hub. Flagstone paving ties the structure to the rest of the yard cleanly, and the stepping stone path pulls you through the space naturally. A rock garden sits further back and gives the yard a middle destination - somewhere for the eye to land besides the fence line. These aren't just design choices, they're functional decisions that make the yard feel larger and more intentional.

The plantings are low-water and pollinator-friendly, chosen specifically for the Front Range climate. Small shrubs, ground-hugging perennials, and drought-tolerant specimens are already tucked in between the stone. As they fill in, they'll soften the hardscape and attract pollinators without adding irrigation headaches. That's the difference between a yard that looks good on install day and one that actually improves with time.

We think about longevity on every job like this. The materials won't fade or fall apart under Colorado's UV and freeze-thaw cycles. The plants won't beg for water every August. And the layout was designed so there's nothing here that will need to be ripped out and redone in five years. That's what water-wise outdoor living looks like when it's done right.
